The city of Sumter offers residents a suburban feel in the center of the state. The city served as a supply and railroad repair center during the Civil War. During the 20th century the city developed into a major industrial center for textiles and manufacturing.
The Sumter location allows close proximity to the beach and Blue Ridge Mountains. Popular attraction include the Shaw Air Force base and the Swan Lake Iris Garden. This garden is the only place in the United States where all eight species of swans can be observed.
As of 2010, the city had a population of 40,000. Sumter has become a popular city for families and young professionals. The city of Sumter has begun renovating the downtown area, local golf courses, and attract jobs.
